Buying Mosaic Art

How do you celebrate your successes? As a small business owner, work usually involves juggling a number of tasks. For me that includes creating artwork, developing and running classes as well as doing all the sales and marketing required to actually sell the things.

It can be hard work at times to manage everything, so when I had a successful launch of my mosaic kits a few months ago, I decided to treat myself to something to celebrate!

A mosaic made from stone and glass. Ut has a large piece of blue glass at the centre and is surrounded by smaller pieces of glass and stone.

Take a look at ‘Marine 2’ by Lindsey Packingham and admire how lovely it is, and let me tell you a bit more about why I bought this particular piece of art.

I’ve been following Lindsey on Instagram for a while now and I love her work.

I highly recommend popping over to her instagram page or website to have a look.

The pieces in the mini biomes series she has been working on recently were within my budget, so I went shopping online!

I selected 'Marine 2', partly because I liked the mix of materials and colours, but also because I had just had a break beside the coast so it seemed to tie in nicely.

Some people might ask the question why buy a piece of mosaic art when you are a mosaic artist - can you not just make something similar for yourself?

Well, in theory, yes, I have the skills to make something like this, but that is not the point. There are several reasons why I wouldn’t and shouldn’t do that.

The main reason, first and foremost, is the copyright issue.

An artist invests a lot of time, often years, developing the skills required to create a piece of artwork. They have spent time working on not only their techniques, but on the process of developing and creating a successful design. It takes experience to know what combinations of materials might work and how to successfully put them together in design that works well.

To simply take all that work and make a copy is wrong!

Not only that, but when I make something I want it to be an original design that I have created - something that communicates the story I want to share, not to tell someone else’s story.

Aside from those issues though, I like to have art on display in my home that I haven’t made. I always see the flaws or things I would change in my own work, whereas I am far less critical of other people’s work.

But another important reason for buying a piece of art, rather than make one myself, is that it makes me happy!

Each piece of original art in my home, whether big or small, has been bought for a particular reason. Each time I pass it hanging on a wall, as well as looking good, it has the power to bring back memories and make me smile.

So this new mosaic is a reminder of a lovely trip to the Welsh coast as well as the successful launch of my mosaic kits.  It has been on my wall for a couple of months now and it still makes me smile when I pass it.

Finally, I just wanted to say that Lindsey was a lovely person to do business with - she was very professional and the work came extremely well packaged and tied with a golden ribbon. I think I might need to up my game when I send out artwork next time!
