The Weight of Words

The weight of words. Mosaic art about bullying. Created by Rachel Davies Contemporary Mosaic Artist.

This mosaic was created in response to my daughter experiencing bullying at high school. It aims to show how numerous small comments on a daily basis can build up, wearing away at self esteem and crushing confidence.

The black/grey area is made from waste materials - dried out tile adhesive, a broken floor tile and an old roof slate. I deliberately left the marks from cutting them - they are unattractive, like the cruel words they represent. The bottom section is made from precious materials - gold, iridescent and regular smalti. They represent the resilience of the bullied person, weighed down by the words but still shining and beautiful.

This mosaic was juried into the MAANZ international 2021 exhibition.
